India Adopts ISO/IEC 19798:2025 for Colour Toner Yield: What Suppliers Must Update Before February 2027

2026/10/19      view:

India has moved to the latest edition of the international colour toner yield standard, and the change gives cartridge suppliers a clear deadline for updating their paperwork. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) established IS/ISO/IEC 19798:2025 on 28 August 2026 and formally notified the change in the Gazette of India on 17 September. It replaces IS/ISO/IEC 19798:2017. Both editions may be used in parallel until 28 February 2027, when the older Indian standard is withdrawn.

What the standard actually covers

ISO/IEC 19798 defines how declared page yield is measured for toner-containing cartridges used in colour electrophotographic printers and multifunction devices. Its scope includes all-in-one cartridges and toner-only cartridges where the photoconductor is supplied separately - the architecture used by many Kyocera, Ricoh and Konica Minolta machines. It does not apply to devices whose minimum printable size is A3 or larger, nor to photo-only printers, and it makes no claim about print quality, reliability or total running cost. Yield is one input to cost per page, not the whole calculation.

Why it matters commercially

Declared yield is the number buyers compare, and in India it is written into public purchasing. Industry reports note that government and public-enterprise tenders regularly specify a minimum page yield together with evidence from a recognised test method, so a datasheet citing a superseded edition can be challenged at the bid stage. For compatible and remanufactured suppliers, credible yield data is the main way to compete with original products on cost per page, which makes the version number on the test report almost as important as the page count itself.

A short transition checklist

  • Audit every colour SKU datasheet, label and quotation that still cites IS/ISO/IEC 19798:2017, and re-test your top sellers to the 2025 edition.
  • Keep monochrome claims on ISO/IEC 19752 - the revision affects colour measurement only.
  • State the standard edition, test coverage and batch number on documents, not just the page count.
  • For machines with separate drums, report cartridge yield and drum life as two separate figures.
  • Remember yield testing is not a quality certificate: pair it with defect-rate records, leak checks and print samples.

For most exporters the task is straightforward - find the yield claims based on the 2017 edition and move them across before the February deadline. Those who finish early hold a documentation advantage in Indian tenders through the transition.
