Xerox and Lexmark Integration: What a Shared Toner Formula Means for Cartridge Buyers in 2027
Xerox completed its acquisition of Lexmark in July 2025, and the integration has now reached the part of the business most buyers actually touch: the toner itself. Speaking at the Xerox Global Partner Summit in Nashville on 15 October 2026, Chris White, senior vice president for office products and print services, said the company's going-forward toner formulation is not a choice between the two legacy recipes but a combination of them — down to the toner particles.
That detail matters more than it first appears. A shared formulation across two large installed bases changes what "genuine" looks like, and it sets the baseline that third-party alternatives will be measured against for the rest of the decade.
A four-year transition, not a switchover
White has been open about a 2030 target for bringing the product lines and technology together, describing it as a four-year journey. Xerox has released 35 new products this year with nine more due in the fourth quarter, and in early October it introduced its first Xerox-branded A4 colour devices built on the combined portfolio — the C240 printer and the C245, C303a and C305ae multifunction printers — launched in Malaysia ahead of a wider roll-out. By his account, the largest remaining obstacle is IT systems and architecture, not hardware or chemistry.
What this means if you buy consumables
- Mixed fleets are the norm until 2030. Lexmark devices stay in service and the brand is retained for now, so dealers need coverage for both part-number families for years, not quarters.
- New models mean new chips. Every new Xerox-branded engine arrives with its own cartridge identification and firmware generation. Order by OEM reference number plus machine firmware version, not by model name alone.
- Expect part-number churn. As lines converge, some legacy references are consolidated or retired. Work out which SKUs your accounts depend on and plan transition stock before the change lands.
- Environmental claims are moving up the agenda. The new A4 devices are marketed with more than 50% post-consumer recycled plastic content, and European rules now require such claims to be specific and demonstrable.
- Documentation beats price. On an audited fleet, page yield tested to ISO/IEC 19752 or 19798 and tied to batch numbers settles an argument faster than a cheaper quote.
Industry reports generally suggest that consolidation on this scale tightens OEM control of the supplies channel during the first two years, before the installed base settles again. For independent buyers the practical response is unchanged: keep a verified cross-reference for every machine you support, and re-check it whenever a new engine ships.
